The Wall Street Journal Reports that Microsoft has released a free update for Windows XP Media Center that allows computers with this operating system to link with the upcoming Xbox 360. This will make it so that users can stream digitial music, photos, and high-definition video from their PCs to a television via this connection.
Also, an “Away Mode” will be included, which will allow the device to save power when performing tasks where no user interaction is necessary (such as recording TV shows). This is a big step for Windows XP Media Center, which is generally the least popular operating system Microsoft has to offer. It had all the limitations of XP Home (limited networking support, etc.) with only little advantages not necessarily justifying the higher price. It looks like that may change now…
